When it comes to judging one's academic capabilities, most people turn to school grades as a benchmark. But can school grades really provide an accurate estimate of a person's success in life? To answer that question, we must also consider how school grades can affect one's mental health and what other measures of success exist.
Grades are, unsurprisingly, one of the biggest stressors for students. Not living up to one's expectations can be incredibly detrimental to the mental and emotional wellbeing of a person. Research has found that higher academic achievement is linked to an individual's improved self-esteem and propensity for physical activity, and that lower grades are associated with negative emotions such as anxiety and depression. Furthermore, the pressure to succeed academically has been linked to suicide prevention and stress among students
.
But although academic attainment certainly plays a role in one's future success, it is not the only measure of success by any means. While people with higher grades may have an easier time getting into college and finding a job, people with lower grades can still be highly successful in their field. Many employers are increasingly valuing "soft skills" such as the ability to collaborate, problem-solve and think critically over academic performance. Furthermore, industry experience and internships can trump a higher GPA.
But even if a person is unable to find success in their chosen field as a result of their grades, that doesn't mean they are any less capable of achieving success in other areas. Success doesn't always have to be measured in money or job titles. Success can come in the form of having meaningful relationships, living a meaningful life, or achieving personal goals like learning a language or completing a marathon.
At the end of the day, the idea that a good grade will guarantee success later on in life is a myth. School grades should still be taken seriously, but it's important to remember that there are other paths to success and that, no matter one's academic record, any individual has the potential to achieve greatness.
